Accra:The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has emphasized the importance of incorporating the history of the 1990 mass uprising and the July mass uprising, along with the 1971 Liberation War, in national documentaries.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the committee highlighted the need to include these historical events in significant documentaries and archival documents maintained by the Bangladesh Film Archive. These recommendations were made at the committee's second meeting, chaired by Md. Amanullah Aman, MP, at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Attendees at the meeting included Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman, State Minister Yasser Khan Choudhury, and several lawmakers. The committee also addressed the social impact of Bangladesh Television (BTV) programming, urging BTV to maintain its role as a public service broadcaster rather than pursuing commercial interests. The importance of defining BTV's objectives and ensuring news relevance was also stressed.
The committee discussed compiling a list of ministry officials allegedly forced into retirement or denied promotions over the past 17 years, to be reviewed at the next meeting. A list of canceled programs during the same period was also requested. Furthermore, the committee underscored the need for transparency and accountability within the ministry and announced plans to visit Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC).
In light of the upcoming Durga Puja, the committee encouraged active support to ensure that the Hindu community can celebrate the festival peacefully. The meeting was attended by the information and broadcasting secretary, directors general of various departments, heads of relevant organizations, and senior ministry officials.
