Gazipur:The state-owned Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) is set to finance Walton's ambitious 50 megawatt (MW) solar power project. This initiative represents one of the most significant rooftop and floating solar investments by a private manufacturer in the country.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, IDCOL will provide a total of Tk 144 crore for the project, with Tk 44 crore already disbursed. This information was shared by IDCOL’s acting managing director Monirul Islam during a briefing at Walton's complex in Chandra, Gazipur.

Currently, Walton has installed 32 MW of solar power across factory rooftops, walkways, and a 1.25 MW floating plant on a factory pond, all with assistance from IDCOL. The electronics company, which consumes around 35 MW of energy daily, aims to increase its solar capacity by an additional 18 MW by December this year, bringing its total green energy generation to 50 MW. Walton's Additional Managing Director Mohammad Yusuf Ali emphasized their goal to meet all daytime energy needs from renewable sources.

IDCOL, a major supporter of renewable energy since 2002, is shifting its focus toward industrial rooftop and floating solar projects to help the government achieve its renewable energy targets. This move comes as Bangladesh seeks to diversify its energy sources, enhance efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions amid rising industrial power costs. Walton expects that this solar transition will substantially decrease its reliance on the grid and lower energy expenses, all while enhancing its compliance with green factory standards for export markets.
