Accra:A seminar held at a city hotel focused on developing a 'National Port Strategy' that aims to advance Bangladesh's economic interests and facilitate international trade. The event was organized by the Ministry of Shipping.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam emphasized that a large portion of Bangladesh's trade activities are tied to the management of sea, river, and land ports. He underscored the urgency of implementing coordinated and efficient strategies for port management to support economic progress.
The seminar was attended by State Minister for Shipping Md Razib Ahsan, JICA Bangladesh Office's Chief Representative Junko Takahashi, and various stakeholders including port authorities, government officials, business representatives, and experts. The minister reiterated that the national port strategy should cater to the country's broader economic interests without undermining any specific agency's authority.
An integrated port management strategy is deemed essential to enhance port capacities and improve operational systems. The government is working towards finalizing this strategy with collaboration from JICA and other experts. The input of relevant local and international specialists is being leveraged to create an effective strategy document.
The minister stressed the importance of mutual cooperation among ministries and agencies, ensuring that no single entity's interests take precedence over the national interest. The strategy should involve the Ministry of Shipping, Ministry of Commerce, National Board of Revenue, and other entities involved in import-export activities to achieve desired outcomes.
