Dhaka:State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam emphasized the importance of cultural diplomacy as a key tool for strengthening international partnerships, promoting people-to-people exchanges, and enhancing Bangladesh's global image. She made these remarks at a seminar titled "Kazi Nazrul Islam The Universal Voice of Freedom and Humanity" held at the Foreign Service Academy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the seminar was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and it featured a vibrant cultural program following the discussions.
Shama highlighted that culture is increasingly seen as a strategic means to present Bangladesh's heritage, values, and identity on the global stage. She argued that amid global conflicts and geopolitical tensions, traditional diplomacy is insufficient, and cultural engagement is crucial.
The state minister emphasized the importance of creative collaboration to showcase Bangladesh’s rich cultural traditions. She argued that this approach could foster goodwill and build lasting relationships with the international community.
Shama also underscored the need for a common platform to unite people and reinforce their commitment to universal values. She described national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam as a symbol of harmony and human solidarity, whose works could effectively promote cultural diplomacy worldwide.
Nazrul's literary and musical contributions were highlighted as transcending geographical boundaries and enhancing mutual understanding among nations. Shama noted that his philosophy aligns with Bangladesh's identity and efforts to promote peace and tolerance internationally.
The seminar also stressed Nazrul's relevance beyond commemoration, aiming to introduce his life and universal messages to a broader international audience. Shama explained how Nazrul’s non-communal philosophy has shaped Bengali identity, emphasizing tolerance and peaceful coexistence, values reflected in Bangladesh's Constitution.
Promoting Nazrul's legacy globally could position Bangladesh as a culturally diverse and intellectually confident nation committed to peace and development. Shama expressed hope for increased international engagement with Nazrul's works to foster deeper appreciation and cultural cooperation.
