Dhaka:A court today denied the bail plea of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam in a case concerning allegations of abetting his second wife, Mariam Khatun, to commit suicide.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al-Biruni Mir issued the order following a hearing. This decision follows a previous ruling on October 7 by Magistrate Ariful Islam, who similarly denied bail for Gazi Nazrul. The lawmaker was initially jailed on September 28 after his second remand period ended.

On September 24, Magistrate Ripon Hossain had ordered a fresh four-day remand for Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, while his first wife, Maksuda Islam, was placed on a one-day remand on September 21. Another accused, Obaidur Rahman, was sent to jail on September 23.

Mariam's body was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat No. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban on the evening of September 20. Following this, the lawmaker and his first wife were taken into custody.

The case was filed by Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. It names Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam, and Mariam's maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman as accused of encouraging her suicide.

Case documents reveal that Mariam, 19, married MP Gazi Nazrul in June 2026, reportedly under the "direct instigation" of Obaidur Rahman. She had been residing with Nazrul and Maksuda at Flat No. 203 of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban, opposite the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Mariam had reported to her family that she faced physical and mental abuse from Nazrul and Maksuda since their marriage.
