Chattogram:The involvement of global port operator DP World in managing the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at Chattogram Port is anticipated to enhance efficiency, reduce trade costs, and attract foreign investment, according to business leaders.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, DP World's international expertise and modern technology could help decrease vessel waiting times and container congestion, improve cargo handling, and enhance Bangladesh's competitiveness in international trade. The port's efficiency is crucial for the country's industrial growth, export expansion, and economic development.
Md Fazlul Hoque of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry emphasized the potential positive impact on imports and exports if DP World's experience is effectively utilized. He highlighted the importance of prioritizing national economic benefits over port revenue, noting that improved services could lower import costs and facilitate exports.
Mohammad Hatem from the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association expressed support for the government's agreement with DP World, citing opportunities to reduce operational costs and contribute to economic growth. He called for stakeholder engagement to address any concerns about the agreement, emphasizing that economic interests should guide evaluations.
Chattogram Port currently faces operational challenges, ranking 364th among 400 ports worldwide in the 2025 Container Port Performance Index. World Bank data indicates extended waiting times for cargo handling and container dwell times, resulting in significant economic losses. A reduction in dwell time could boost trade through the port by 7.5 percent.
DP World's 15-year agreement includes operating NCT, managing vessel schedules, and facilitating container movement. The initiative aims to reduce congestion through modern equipment and automated systems. Financial terms involve an upfront payment and revenue sharing with the Chattogram Port Authority, alongside substantial investment in terminal modernisation.
Former BGMEA president SM Fazlul Hoque and Russell Mahmud of Bay-Berth Maritime underscored the importance of utilizing DP World's experience to strengthen export capacity and reduce costs. They stressed that the arrangement maintains ownership with Bangladesh, with success depending on service quality, cost control, and transparency. If successful, the agreement could modernize port infrastructure and attract further foreign investment.
