Dhaka:Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood held a meeting with the Algerian ambassador to discuss a potential agreement for importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) due to disruptions in Middle Eastern supplies.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the discussions focused on possible memoranda of understanding regarding LNG and LPG cooperation. Preparations for Minister Tarique Rahman's upcoming visit to Algeria were also addressed.
During the meeting, which took place in Mahmood's office, both he and Algerian Ambassador Dr. Abdelouahab Saïdani explored ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in the energy sector. They emphasized their commitment to strengthening the longstanding ties between the two nations. Energy Secretary Md Ziaul Huq was also in attendance.
Algeria, located in North Africa with coastlines along the Mediterranean Sea, has become an alternative source of petroleum for South Asian countries due to shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Previously, Algerian exports of LNG and LPG were primarily directed towards Europe, but recent geopolitical changes have led South Asian countries to actively seek new suppliers outside the Middle East. Shipping routes from Algeria to South Asia completely avoid the Strait of Hormuz, making it a viable option.
