Chandpur:The Bangladesh Navy today confiscated 714,870 meters of illegal fishing nets and 22 other nets, valued at approximately Taka 6.99 crore, during a district-wide operation aimed at safeguarding the breeding and reproduction of mother hilsa.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operations took place in several areas, including Anandabazar, Dashadi Khal, Shahar Mali, Lalpur, No-3 Koila Ghat, Chandpur Mohona, Gazir Tek, Miar Bazar, Kanudi, and Amirabad.

The confiscated nets were subsequently destroyed in compliance with regulations, in the presence of local administrative and fisheries officials.

Lieutenant Commander Faiz Kafi, commander of the Chandpur Navy Contingent, emphasized that the Navy's efforts are ongoing to ensure uninterrupted hilsa breeding, prevent illegal fishing, and conserve the nation's fisheries resources. He noted that Navy personnel are consistently conducting operations in the sea, coastal areas, and inland rivers during the breeding season to protect mother hilsa.

The Navy is actively working to enforce the government-imposed ban on hilsa fishing and safeguard fisheries resources. The current mother hilsa conservation initiative, which began on October 8, will continue until October 29. During this period, the catching, transporting, storing, buying, selling, and exchanging of hilsa are prohibited.

The Navy has appealed for cooperation from all parties involved to effectively implement the ban and protect the country's hilsa resources.
