Chandpur:The Bangladesh Navy has seized 714,870 meters of illegal fishing nets and 22 other nets, valued at an estimated Taka 6.99 crore, during an operation across various areas of Chandpur district. This operation aims to protect the breeding and reproduction of mother hilsa.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the operation covered areas such as Anandabazar, Dashadi Khal, Shahar Mali, Lalpur, No-3 Koila Ghat, Chandpur Mohona, Gazir Tek, Miar Bazar, Kanudi, and Amirabad. The seized nets were destroyed in compliance with regulations, with local administration and fisheries officers present.

Lieutenant Commander Faiz Kafi, who leads the Chandpur Navy Contingent, emphasized the Navy's ongoing operations to ensure uninterrupted hilsa breeding, prevent illegal fishing, and conserve the country's fisheries resources. He noted that Navy personnel are actively conducting operations in the sea, coastal areas, and inland rivers during the breeding season to protect mother hilsa.

The Navy is enforcing a government-imposed ban on catching hilsa to safeguard fisheries resources. The conservation drive began on October 8 and will continue until October 29, during which time the capturing, transporting, storing, buying, selling, and exchanging of hilsa are prohibited. The Navy has called for cooperation from all parties to ensure the effective implementation of the ban and the protection of hilsa resources.
