Dhaka:Investors are being defrauded through fake investment offers and misinformation on social media, warns Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) Chairman Mominul Islam. He highlighted the issue at a seminar titled "Digital Deception and Scam Alert" held at the DSE Tower in Nikunja.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Mominul Islam stated that these scams, which misuse the logos of stock exchanges and financial institutions, are causing significant financial losses and eroding public confidence in the capital market. He emphasized the need for modern surveillance, law enforcement, investor awareness, and stronger communication to address these challenges.

The seminar, organized by the DSE and the DSE Brokers Association of Bangladesh, was part of "World Investor Week 2026." Mominul stressed the importance of providing timely, accurate, and complete information to investors as a key condition for effective information flow in the capital market. However, he noted that the rise of social media has introduced digital fraud as a new threat.

Fraudsters are exploiting people's desire to get rich quickly with unrealistic promises, such as doubling their money in a short time. These scams, including Ponzi schemes, have spread widely due to social media, according to Mominul. He also mentioned that a large volume of information unrelated to market fundamentals is circulating online, confusing investors and potentially disrupting market function.

The DSE chairman outlined steps taken to modernize surveillance and monitoring systems, as well as efforts to enhance investor awareness in collaboration with the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission. Mominul stressed that preventive measures alone are insufficient, and credible information and positive messages must be disseminated to counter misleading campaigns.

He called for strong brokerage houses, merchant banks, and asset management companies to build institutional capacity and governance while focusing on gaining public trust. Collective efforts are needed to develop the capital market as a robust pillar of the economy, with effective surveillance and communication systems to combat digital fraud and restore investor confidence.
