Dhaka:Investors are being targeted by digital fraud schemes that promise quick and substantial returns, warned Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) Chairman Mominul Islam. These fraudulent offers, which spread misinformation and promise to double money in a short time, are often circulated on social media using fake credentials.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Mominul highlighted the financial losses suffered by investors due to scams that misuse the logos of stock exchanges and financial institutions. Speaking at a seminar titled "Digital Deception and Scam Alert" at the DSE Tower, he emphasized the erosion of public confidence in the capital market and called for modern surveillance measures, law enforcement, increased investor awareness, and stronger communication to counter these challenges.
The seminar was organized by the DSE and the DSE Brokers Association of Bangladesh (DBA) as part of "World Investor Week 2026." Mominul stressed the importance of providing timely and accurate information to investors to maintain effective information flow in the capital market. He pointed out the emergence of digital fraud as a significant challenge with the rise of social media.
Fraudsters are exploiting individuals' desire for quick wealth by promising unrealistic returns, such as doubling an investment within two weeks. These scams, including Ponzi schemes, have been amplified by social media, spreading misinformation unrelated to market fundamentals. Mominul expressed concern over individuals pretending to be financial analysts and misleading investors with baseless market predictions.
To address these issues, the DSE is working on modernizing its surveillance systems and enhancing investor awareness programs in collaboration with the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC). Mominul emphasized the necessity of not only preventive measures but also the dissemination of credible information to combat misleading campaigns.
He also highlighted the importance of strengthening brokerage houses, merchant banks, and asset management companies to build public trust and improve governance. Collective efforts are needed to develop the capital market into a robust economic pillar. Mominul concluded by stressing the importance of effective surveillance, increased awareness, and a solid communication system to fight digital fraud and restore investor confidence.
