Accra:The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives has suggested implementing a three-year warranty through security deposits from contractors to ensure the quality of rural road construction, following directives from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. This proposal was made during the committee's first meeting, chaired by AKM Selim Reza Habib.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the committee emphasized the need for enhanced monitoring of construction work, ensuring that officials perform their duties effectively. A presentation on the activities of the ministry and its subordinate departments was delivered at the meeting, highlighting the initiatives undertaken during the government's first 180 days.
The committee recommended identifying arsenic-affected areas across the country and ensuring the provision of safe drinking water to residents in those areas. Additionally, it suggested measures to boost cleanliness campaigns and increase public awareness to control Aedes mosquitoes and prevent dengue.
To further enhance accountability, the committee advised that Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) oversee cleanliness drives and take steps to improve public awareness. It also recommended the introduction of an online attendance system for officials at the upazila level to strengthen monitoring and accountability.
The committee also proposed investigating irregularities and corruption in unnecessary projects financed by domestic and foreign funding during the previous government, described as 'fascist'.
