Dhaka:Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized the importance of building a self-reliant, secure, and welfare-oriented state as a way to honor the sacrifices of Shaheed Nazir Uddin Jehad and other martyrs. This statement was made in a message commemorating the 36th anniversary of Jehad's martyrdom.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rahman highlighted the beginning of a renewed journey for democracy in Bangladesh, marked by Jehad's bloodshed. He stressed the need to establish a state that fulfills the aspirations of those who laid down their lives for democracy and the rights of the people.
Recalling the contributions of brave individuals in the country's democratic struggles, the prime minister noted that figures like Jehad have consistently risen against authoritarian rule, sacrificing their lives to protect people's rights.
The prime minister paid tribute to Jehad, a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal from Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj, who was killed in Dhaka on October 10, 1990, during a protest against the autocratic regime of Hussain Muhammad Ershad. Jehad's death became emblematic of the broader movement that led to the fall of Ershad's regime in December 1990, symbolizing the fight to restore democracy, multiparty politics, and citizens' rights.
