Dhaka:Health experts are emphasizing the importance of early testing, timely treatment, and increased public awareness to reduce fatalities from dengue, a mosquito-borne illness. Delays in diagnosis and hospital admission have been linked to most dengue-related deaths.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Shahnoor Sharmin Munni from Dhaka Medical College Hospital noted that many patients arrive at hospitals in severe conditions, leaving little time for effective treatment. She stressed that dengue testing should not be delayed, and people should remain vigilant even if a fever subsides, as complications can arise afterward.

Mugda Medical College Hospital's Deputy Director, Dr. Muhammad Nurul Islam, highlighted the risk of plasma leakage, a dangerous complication that can occur even after fever reduction. He advised against assuming recovery solely based on fever decline and recommended seeking medical attention immediately.

Dr. Islam explained that early detection through tests like the NS1 antigen and antibody tests can help manage most cases at home, following national guidelines. He also advised against using antibiotics and certain painkillers, which can pose risks for dengue patients.

Brigadier General Md Saydur Rahman of Kurmitola Multicare Specialized Hospital emphasized that early diagnosis can prevent unnecessary hospital admissions. He noted that only 10 to 15 percent of patients with severe symptoms require hospitalization.

Dr. Md Nurul Islam from the Directorate General of Health Services assured that diagnostic kits and intravenous fluids are available nationwide. The government encourages early testing and treatment to alleviate pressure on major hospitals, suggesting local health facilities for initial care.

The DGHS reported that 94,151 people have been infected with dengue, and 294 have died this year, underscoring the urgency for proactive health measures.
