Chattogram:Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the government's decision to develop Chattogram as a regional economic hub and an aesthetically pleasing city under a comprehensive plan. The initiative aims to address the persistent water logging problem and elevate the city's living conditions through visionary projects.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the finance minister spoke as the chief guest at a meeting focused on waterlogging mitigation, canal excavation, and maintenance projects in the city. The meeting, organized by the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) and chaired by Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain, highlighted the need for green spaces, walkways, and cycle tracks to ensure a healthy environment for residents.
Minister Amir Khosru emphasized that sustainable solutions require civic interest, long-term environmental benefits, and multilateral advantages. He encouraged the inclusion of walkways, drainage facilities, and bicycle tracks in future projects to address water logging and canal maintenance effectively.
The finance minister also urged tree plantations along riverbanks and canals, aligning with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's nationwide tree plantation program. He called for coordinated efforts among stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the city's flash floods, which cause significant economic losses annually.
The government's comprehensive plan includes developing the seaport, deep-sea port, airport, and exclusive economic zones, aiming to transform Chattogram into a regional economic hub. Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain confirmed CCC's collaboration with government bodies and utility service providers to alleviate water congestion.
At the meeting, Brigade Colonel Mohsinul Haq Chowdhury briefed attendees on the progress of a nearly Tk. 8000 crore project aimed at resolving water logging issues. The project is nearing completion, with dredging, excavation, and construction of retaining walls for 31 out of 36 canals finalized. The remaining work is expected to conclude by February, with canal maintenance responsibilities transferring to CCC by March.
Additionally, CCC officials plan to recover and re-excavate 130 identified canals, requiring at least Tk. 9000 crore for the first phase involving 41 canals. The initiative has already reduced water logging areas from 113 to 13 by 2025 through the demolition of approximately 5,500 illegal structures.
