Cox's Bazar:The government has announced plans to establish two Army camps in the hilly regions near the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar to tackle rising crime rates, particularly abductions. This decision was disclosed by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed after a meeting at the Secretariat.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Salahuddin Ahmed stated that the camps will be set up at Noakhalipara and Rangikhali, areas notorious for abductions where victims are often taken to the hills for ransom. These camps will operate under the 10 Infantry Division based in Ramu.
The minister emphasized that the initiative aims to curb crimes such as drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and human trafficking, which are prevalent in the area. In addition to these new Army camps, the government plans to repair damaged portions of the barbed-wire fencing around the camps and enhance security with solar-powered lights, CCTV cameras, and watchtowers.
Law enforcement agencies are already conducting joint operations in and around the camps, led by a deputy inspector general of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn). These efforts also involve other law enforcement personnel to address major crimes linked to the Rohingya camps, including online gambling and activities by armed groups.
For the Jungle Salimpur area in Chattogram, the government is taking steps to manage state land effectively, including plans to establish a police academy similar to the Sardah Police Academy. Land identification for this project is currently underway.
