Textile Industry Urged to Reduce Groundwater Usage

Tejgaon:Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee has called on the textile industry to decrease its reliance on groundwater in a bid to conserve water resources and promote sustainable sector growth.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Minister Anee emphasized the importance of developing alternative water sources and implementing efficient water usage methods within the textile industry. His remarks were made during the inaugural ceremony of the BUTEX-ITET Dye-Chem Expo 2026 at the Bangladesh University of Textiles in Tejgaon.

Highlighting the significant water consumption of the textile sector and the declining groundwater levels, Anee urged a shift towards increased use of surface water. He stressed the necessity of water conservation, effective wastewater treatment, water reuse, and eco-friendly production methods as crucial elements for sustainable industrial development.

The minister expressed optimism that the BUTEX-ITET Dye-Chem Expo would foster innovation, enhance collaboration between industry and academia, and inspire the next generation of textile professionals. He noted the pivotal role of the textile industry in Bangladesh's economy and the high demand for skilled professionals both domestically and internationally.

Minister Anee acknowledged that BUTEX produces hundreds of skilled graduates annually who are highly sought after in the job market. The event was presided over by BUTEX Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Zulhash Uddin, with Institution of Textile Engineers and Technologists (ITET) President Enayet Hossain and Secretary General ASM Hafizur Rahman Nixon attending as special guests.
