Dhaka:President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged visiting UK lawmakers to enhance the relationship between the parliaments of Bangladesh and the United Kingdom and to increase investment between the two countries. This call was made during a courtesy meeting with a delegation from the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Bangladesh, which took place at Bangabhaban.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the delegation was led by Apsana Begum, Chair of the APPG and a British MP of Bangladeshi origin. The group also included MP Shockat Adam and Lord Qurban Hussain from the House of Lords.
During the meeting, President Alamgir highlighted the contributions of the British Parliament's All-Party Parliamentary Group in restoring democracy in Bangladesh, a gesture that is appreciated by the people of Bangladesh. He emphasized the UK as a key economic and development partner and one of Bangladesh's largest export markets, reaffirming the importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties.
The President acknowledged the UK's democratic tradition and good governance, advocating for further parliamentary cooperation through reciprocal visits, committee exchanges, and official training. He also expressed optimism about establishing a Bangladesh-UK Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Jatiya Sangsad.
Apsana Begum commended President Alamgir on his election and lauded his perseverance amidst challenges in the movement to restore democracy. The delegation also extended their congratulations on the conduct of a free and fair election in Bangladesh.
President Alamgir noted that the 2026 national parliamentary election was recognized both domestically and internationally. He mentioned Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's efforts in strengthening various institutions in Bangladesh, akin to British institutions. The meeting was also attended by the President's Military Secretary, Secretary, and Press Secretary.
