Crackdown in Chattogram Leads to 790 Arrests Across 11 Districts

Chattogram:Police have arrested 790 individuals from 11 districts in Chattogram over a 24-hour period ending Wednesday. The arrests were part of operations targeting juvenile gangs, mugging, extortion, terrorist activities, and drug offenses.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the police detained 497 individuals specifically in anti-juvenile gang operations. Among those arrested, 58 were held in regular cases, 85 in previous cases, 27 under Section 34 of the Police Act, 11 under Section 54 of the CrPC, and 29 under other legal provisions, including Section 151. Additionally, 141 individuals were apprehended on arrest warrants and 19 on conviction warrants.

A total of 76 people were arrested in connection with drug-related offenses, including 49 in drug cases (comprising one carrier and 48 users) and 27 drug dealers in regular and other cases. The authorities seized 43,119 Yaba tablets, 82 kg and 80 grams of cannabis, 12 liters of illicitly distilled liquor, 12 bottles of foreign liquor, and three Tapentadol tablets. In total, 23 cases were filed, and mobile courts sentenced 27 individuals to imprisonment, imposing fines totaling Tk 10,300.

Furthermore, 29 members of organizations with banned activities were arrested across several districts: seven in Chandpur, six in Feni, four each in Chattogram and Noakhali, three in Cumilla, two in Lakshmipur, and one each in Brahmanbaria, Rangamati, and Bandarban.

Out of the 497 individuals detained in the anti-juvenile gang operations, 371 were released to their guardians after signing a bond, while legal action was taken against the remaining 126. Noakhali and Cumilla saw the highest number of detentions with 157 and 150 individuals respectively, followed by Chattogram with 56, Brahmanbaria with 48, Cox's Bazar with 31, Khagrachhari with 25, Chandpur with 19, Lakshmipur with 6, and Rangamati with 5.
