Lalmonirhat:A court in Lalmonirhat has sentenced Atiqul Islam to death for the murder of his wife, Mitu Akter, in 2023 following a family dispute.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the verdict was delivered by Lalmonirhat District and Sessions Judge Md Haider Ali. In addition to the death sentence, Atiqul Islam, the son of Habibur Rahman from Sadar upazila, was fined Tk 20,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months of imprisonment.
The prosecution revealed that Atiqul married Mitu in 2021, and they had a daughter who was five months old at the time of the incident. The couple frequently argued over family issues. On September 20, 2023, an argument escalated, and Atiqul fatally beat Mitu with a bamboo stick before fleeing the scene.
Neighbors, alerted by the crying of the couple's baby daughter, discovered Mitu's body and notified the police. Subsequently, a case was filed at Sadar Police Station, and a chargesheet against Atiqul was submitted on July 4, 2024.
