Rangamati:A court in Rangamati has sentenced a man to death for the murder of a woman, whose body he subsequently set on fire in 2022.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Rangamati District and Session Judge Mohammad Ahsan Tarek delivered the death sentence to Mohammad Mahibur Kamal Mahibullah, the son of Monir Uddin from Netrakona district. In addition to the death penalty, the court imposed a fine of Tk 50,000 on Mahibur.

The prosecution detailed that Mahibur had traveled to Kaptai for work, where he developed a romantic relationship with Hasina Begum Sumi, aged 28. On March 11, 2022, an argument between Mahibur and Sumi concerning their relationship and financial matters escalated at BFIDC Model Government Primary School in Kaptai. During this confrontation, Mahibur struck Sumi on the head with a brick, resulting in her immediate death.

Subsequently, Mahibur moved Sumi's body to an unused toilet at the school and set it ablaze. The incident led Sumi's mother, Amena Begum, to file a case against Mahibur.

Authorities arrested Mahibur after tracing call records from Sumi's mobile phone. He later confessed to the crime under Section 164.
