Dhaka:Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has assured the public that extensive security measures will be in place across the capital for a peaceful celebration of Durga Puja.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the DMP Commissioner described this major Hindu festival as an 'acid test' for the current democratic government. He emphasized that the police will remain on high alert to ensure the safety of devotees and visitors at all puja mandaps.
During a meeting at the DMP Headquarters, Commissioner Ahmed outlined the security plan for the five-day festival, starting October 17. The plan includes comprehensive security arrangements for both the celebrations and the idol immersion processions.
To enhance security, every puja mandap will be monitored by CCTV, and mandap in-charges will wear body-worn cameras. Police personnel in uniform and plainclothes, supported by SWAT, Crisis Response Teams, Quick Response Teams, Crime Scene Vans, and the Bomb Disposal Unit, will be on standby throughout the festival.
The DMP chief addressed leaders of the puja celebration committees, urging them to remain vigilant and ensure the security of their respective mandaps. He also recommended that they monitor puja committee members, volunteers, and visitors closely.
Commissioner Ahmed encouraged the public to contact the National Emergency Service 999 or their nearest police station if emergencies arise, expressing optimism that the festival will be celebrated safely and smoothly through collective efforts.
DMP Joint Commissioner (Operations) Mohammad Shahidullah presented detailed security and traffic management plans for the festival. Puja committee leaders requested full cooperation from the DMP to maintain security and manage traffic effectively during the celebrations.
The meeting was attended by several DMP officials, including Additional Commissioners Md Abul Bashar Talukder, Md Shafiqul Islam, Md Masud Karim, Mohammad Shamsul Haque, and Mohammad Osman Gani. Representatives from various religious and community organizations, such as Ramakrishna Math and Mission and Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, were also present.
