Dhaka:Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat has underscored the importance of maintaining uncompromising standards in aviation safety. He highlighted the need for swift emergency responses, coordinated rescue operations, and consistent enforcement of security protocols to ensure passenger protection.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister made these remarks during the Airport Emergency Exercise 2026 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The exercise involved simulating an aircraft fire to evaluate the effectiveness of rescue, fire fighting, and emergency teams in evacuating passengers and crew.

Senior officials from various agencies, including the ministry, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, and the Fire Service, attended the event. Millat emphasized that fire safety and emergency response capabilities are crucial to developing a modern and secure aviation hub.

Reflecting on a previous fire incident at the airport's import cargo complex, Millat noted the significant damage caused and its impact on the country's reputation. He stressed that the current government prioritizes safety and security, emphasizing the critical nature of the initial moments following an airport incident.

The minister urged for improved communication and coordination among emergency services, airport personnel, and other relevant agencies. He mentioned the possibility of signing memorandums of understanding with various ministries to enhance crisis management.

A National Civil Aviation Security Committee has been established to oversee aviation security policies. Millat announced that an audit by the International Civil Aviation Organization would soon take place, encouraging compliance in areas identified by the organization.

Security measures apply equally to all, including VIPs, and must be uniformly enforced to guarantee airport security. Addressing unauthorized drone flights during the cargo fire, Millat proposed installing an anti-drone system within the airport vicinity.

Recognizing the airport as a Key Point Installation, he stressed the need for adequate security equipment and scanners. The minister reiterated that passenger safety and comfort are central to aviation activities, urging officials to deliver services of international standards.

Millat advocated for the adoption of post-exercise evaluation recommendations to enhance emergency management capabilities. He concluded by affirming the government's dedication to establishing a modern, efficient, and safe civil aviation sector that aligns with international standards.
