Dhaka:Sweden is promoting more open, rules-based trade as a response to current geopolitical and economic uncertainties, according to Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Nicolas Weeks.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Weeks emphasized the importance of open trade during a session titled 'Rewiring Global Trade' at the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2026. He argued that while many nations are turning inward, Sweden advocates for increased trade, which has historically contributed to its prosperity and that of Bangladesh.
The discussion highlighted the impact of geopolitical changes, economic nationalism, technological developments, and supply-chain vulnerabilities on global commerce. Weeks noted that as a small, export-dependent nation, Sweden has consistently championed free trade.
Weeks pointed out that Bangladesh's economic progress demonstrates the benefits of openness, with export-led growth lifting millions out of poverty and aiding the country's journey towards graduating from the least developed country category.
From a European viewpoint, the ambassador emphasized the European Union's commitment to open markets and reliable partnerships, noting the significance of the EU-Bangladesh trade relationship, which is expected to grow even more vital after Bangladesh's graduation.
He also underscored the link between openness and sustainability, highlighting Swedish companies' role in providing innovation and clean technology to help Bangladesh maintain its competitiveness as global markets demand greater traceability and lower emissions.
