Dhaka:World Teachers' Day was observed today across Bangladesh, with the government honouring 100 teachers at the national level for the first time.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, like other countries, Bangladesh observed the day with due respect, marking it with a special ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium. This event, called the "Guni Shikshak Sammanana" or Outstanding Teachers' Award ceremony, was part of the annual observance of World Teachers' Day, which has been celebrated since 1994 following UNESCO's initiative.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended the central celebration as the chief guest, organised by the Ministry of Education. This year's theme for World Teachers' Day is "Standing with Teachers: Sixty Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status, Shaping Our Futures."

For the first time, a total of 100 selected teachers from various educational categories, ranging from primary to higher education, received the national "Guni Shikshak Sammanana." The awards were distributed among 10 primary level teachers, 20 secondary level teachers, 25 from colleges, 20 from general universities, 10 from medical colleges, three from agricultural universities, three from engineering universities, four from science and technology and other specialised universities, and five under the Prime Minister's special quota.

The observance of World Teachers' Day at the national level, as outlined by this year's guidelines from the Ministry of Education, took place at all educational institutions as well as at upazila, district, and national levels. The decision to observe October 5 as World Teachers' Day was made at the 26th General Conference of UNESCO held in Paris in 1993, with the first observance taking place in 1994.
