Dhaka:Bangladesh: World Teachers' Day will be observed tomorrow nationwide, with special recognition given to 100 outstanding teachers at the national level for the first time.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the celebration will be part of the global observance initiated by UNESCO in 1994. The theme for this year is 'Standing with Teachers: Sixty Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status, Shaping Our Futures.'
The main ceremony, titled 'Guni Shikshak Sammanana' (Outstanding Teachers' Award), will be held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will be the chief guest, presenting awards including Taka 2 lakh in cash, crests, and certificates to the honored educators.
This year marks the expansion of the award scope from 12 to 100 teachers across various educational levels, including primary, secondary, university, and specialized institutions. This initiative aims to elevate the social status and professional recognition of teachers.
The selection of the 100 teachers was finalized by a national steering committee from panels prepared by search committees under the Directorate of Primary Education, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, Directorate of Technical and Madrasa Education, and the University Grants Commission.
Mahdi Amin, the Prime Minister's Education Adviser, highlighted the government's commitment to recognizing the contributions of teachers, aiming to enhance their social status and professional benefits. The awards reflect efforts to build a research-oriented and practical education system nationwide.
World Teachers' Day was first observed in 1994 following a decision at UNESCO's 26th General Conference in Paris in 1993, and has since been celebrated annually under various themes worldwide.
