Dhaka:A court has ordered the detention of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman following his one-day remand. The case involves accusations of disorderly conduct, obstructing government officials, and assaulting a security officer at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam issued the order after police presented Akhtaruzzaman in court, requesting his continued detention pending the investigation's conclusion.
Earlier, on October 3, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Alberuni Mir had approved a one-day remand for Akhtaruzzaman, though the police had sought a five-day remand. The Detective Branch of Police had arrested him on October 2 at his cantonment residence.
The case documents reveal that on October 1, a 34-member delegation from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, along with their families, arrived in Dhaka from Medina. Their flight landed at 8:55 am and parked at 9:08 am. After immigration, they proceeded to the baggage area where a shortage of trolleys, due to heavy congestion, led to a long queue.
Amid the frustration, several protocol assistants reportedly attempted to bypass the queue for trolleys. This situation aggravated Akhtaruzzaman and others, leading to improper conduct. Akhtaruzzaman allegedly verbally abused and threatened HSIA Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad and verbally and physically abused Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin, a security supervisor.
The case was filed by Mohammad Shahriar Alam Sajib, a security officer at the airport, at the Airport Police Station.
