Dhaka:Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has been shown arrested in a case related to the murder of garment worker Rubel, which occurred during the July 2024 Mass Uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the order to show Awal as arrested in the case was passed by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashraful Haque. The police had brought Awal before the court, requesting that he be formally arrested in relation to the case. Following this, the court sent Awal back to jail.
The case documents detail that on August 5, 2025, a rally involving a couple of hundred student-people, including Rubel, was held in the Adabor Ring Road area of the capital. At approximately 11:30 am, the rally was attacked by police and cadres associated with the Awami League and its front organizations. During the attack, Rubel was shot and killed on the spot.
Rubel's father, Rafikul Islam, filed the case on August 22, 2024, at the Adabor Police Station. Kazi Habibul Awal was arrested by a team from the Detective Branch (DB) of Police on June 25, 2025, in the city's Moghbazar area and has remained in jail since his arrest.
