Dhaka:Customs officials detained a Bangladesh Biman Airlines employee at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after discovering nine gold bars weighing 1,049.40 grams in his possession.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the gold was seized last night at around 1120 p.m. by the airport unit of Dhaka Customs House with the help of Airport Security (AVSEC) and other intelligence agencies.
The employee, identified as Obaidur Rahman, had the gold bars wrapped in tissue paper and concealed in his shirt pocket and waist belt. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) disclosed that the gold is valued at approximately Tk 2.10 crore.
Following a preliminary interrogation of Obaidur Rahman, customs officials also detained a passenger believed to be connected to the incident. Legal proceedings are being pursued against those involved under the Customs Act, 2023, and other applicable laws.
