CCGP Approves Major Contracts for Dhaka Metro Rail Projects

Dhaka:The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) has approved eight procurement proposals valued at TK 58,477.74 crore to accelerate the construction of MRT Line-1 and MRT Line-5 North for the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the approved contracts encompass a range of works including civil and building works, metro rail line and station construction, track works, electrical facilities, signaling, telecommunications, and other operational systems for the two metro rail projects.

Out of the eight packages, six are related to MRT Line-1, also known as the Airport Line. This includes a TK 4,285.07 crore contract for civil and building works at the depot under Contract Package CP-02, awarded to the SINOHYDRO-SEBCL joint venture. Additionally, a TK 18,037.26 crore contract for the main line and stations from north of Rampura to Natun Bazar under CP-04 has been granted to the TOKYU-MIL (MAX Infrastructure Ltd.) joint venture.

The CCGP also approved a TK 11,590.58 crore contract for constructing 5.182 kilometers of the main line from north of Nadda to Airport Station under CP-06, to be executed by the NISHIMATSU-TPL-TODA joint venture. Another contract, worth TK 2,534.09 crore under CP-07, involves the construction of 5.007 kilometers from the transition section to the beginning of the Balu River section, with the CREC-MIL-MBEC joint venture responsible for the work.

A TK 11,065.58 crore contract for track works and electrical facilities under CP-09 will be implemented by the L and T-Sumitomo Consortium, while Larsen and Toubro Limited secured a TK 6,446.65 crore contract under CP-10 for signaling, telecommunications, platform screen doors, and enterprise resource management systems.

For MRT Line-5 North, the committee has approved a TK 1,847.52 crore contract for civil and building works at the depot under CP-02, to be carried out by the CPC-HANIL joint venture, consisting of Concord Pragatee Consortium Ltd. and Hanil Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd. Another contract for TK 2,670.99 crore under CP-03 covers the construction of the main line and five stations along the elevated sections from Hemayetpur Station to Amin Bazar Transition and from Natun Bazar Transition to Vatara Station, executed by the CREC-MIL-MBEC joint venture.

These contracts involve international engineering firms from Japan, China, India, and South Korea, showcasing global collaboration in developing Dhaka's metro rail network. MRT Line-1 is set to become Bangladesh's first underground metro rail line, connecting key areas, including the airport. MRT Line-5 North aims to establish an essential east-west transport corridor with both elevated and underground sections.

DMTCL is carrying out these projects under the Road Transport and Highways Division, with significant financial support from Japanese development cooperation. The approvals are expected to advance major engineering and system works for the two routes, supporting the expansion of Dhaka's mass transit network and enhancing urban mobility.
