Dhaka:The government is moving forward with plans to consolidate three existing laws related to the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force into a single comprehensive 'Ansar Bahini Act,' as announced by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the three laws currently governing the force are the Ansar Bahini (Forces) Act, 1995; the Ansar Battalion Act, 2023; and the Village Defence Party Act, 1995. The initiative aims to replace these with a single, integrated law that will strengthen the legal foundation of the force and enhance discipline in its administration and operations.

The minister shared these developments during a program held at the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force auditorium in Khilgaon, Dhaka, where he inaugurated several new facilities, including the 'Agrojatra Bhaban,' 'Prantik Songjog' service, 'Prantik Shakti,' and a mobile IT training centre.

Salahuddin also discussed plans for a modern Ansar headquarters on 3.428 acres of land in Tejgaon, which will feature a multi-storey facility and command centre to improve communication with other law enforcement agencies and support coordinated strategic planning.

The Home Minister recounted the Ansar and VDP's historical development, highlighting its role in national security through public participation since 1976, evolving into one of the country's largest security platforms. He noted the institutional strengthening during Begum Khaleda Zia's government and the ongoing modernization efforts under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's leadership.

Salahuddin praised the force's contributions to national security, particularly during elections, religious festivals, and major public events. He emphasized their role in joint security operations, combating crime, and enhancing public safety.

The minister also highlighted efforts to transform the workforce, including training for 100,000 TDP volunteers, Japanese-language courses, and digital initiatives, which aim to boost employment, women's empowerment, and economic growth.

He expressed optimism that the new headquarters would improve operational capacity and coordination, becoming a model of public service grounded in good governance and professionalism.

The event was presided over by Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud, Director General of the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force, with senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs also in attendance.
