Dhaka:A mobile court has sentenced two motorcyclists, including a woman, to seven days' imprisonment for allegedly misbehaving with a traffic sergeant on the Purbachal Expressway in the capital.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the individuals sentenced were identified as Mosammat Swapna, 27, and Mahfuzur Rahman. They were stopped by the traffic sergeant while riding on the wrong side of the expressway, a violation of traffic rules, around 430 pm on Tuesday.
The traffic sergeant signalled them to stop in an effort to maintain road discipline and prevent potential accidents. Upon stopping, the sergeant questioned their reason for riding on the wrong side and attempted to enforce the law. At this point, the riders allegedly engaged in an altercation with the sergeant.
A video circulated on social media reportedly depicted the two arguing with the traffic official. In the footage, the female rider allegedly spoke aggressively and appeared to move towards the sergeant, putting him in an awkward situation during his duty.
Mosammat Swapna and Mahfuzur Rahman were detained on allegations of obstructing government duties and publicly misbehaving with and harassing the on-duty traffic sergeant. They were later brought before a Special Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, which sentenced each to seven days in jail.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police stated that operations to maintain road discipline are ongoing. They emphasized that legal action will continue against those violating traffic rules, obstructing government duties, or misbehaving with police personnel while they perform their official responsibilities.
