Jahangirnagar:Jahangirnagar University A leader of the Jatiya Chhatra Shakti at Jahangirnagar University (JU) has been expelled from the organization and handed over to law enforcement following a controversial Facebook comment about former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's birthday.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Rabbi Hossain, who served as the joint general secretary of the JU unit, faced backlash after posting "Happy Birthday Apa" on a Facebook post celebrating Hasina's birthday. This comment led to him being brought to the university's proctor's office by a group of students, later resulting in his handover to Ashulia Police Station by the university administration.
Rabbi, a student in the Government and Politics Department, is part of the 2022-23 academic session and resides at Shaheed Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq Hall. JU Proctor Prof Md Zakir Hossain reported that evidence was found on Rabbi's phone, leading to his transfer to police custody for potential legal action.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Tarikul Islam of Ashulia Police Station confirmed Rabbi's detention and stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine if he was involved in any other offenses.
In response to the incident, the central committee of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti issued a press release expelling Rabbi from all positions, including his primary membership in the JU unit. Rabbi later claimed on Facebook that his comment was sarcastic and asserted his participation in the 2024 movement, denying any ties with the Awami League.
Ziauddin Ayan, president of the JU unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, explained that Rabbi's comment contradicted the organization's principles, leading to the expulsion. He also called for a university investigation into the matter and appropriate measures to be taken.
