Dhaka:Bangladesh and Pakistan engaged in discussions on Monday to enhance cooperation in the health sector. Key topics included the finalization of a proposed memorandum of understanding (MoU), pharmaceuticals, health professionals' capacity building, and organ transplantation.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the discussions took place during a meeting between Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider and Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Shakawat Husain. The meeting was outlined in a press release from the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka.
The High Commissioner presented proposals for collaboration involving Bangladesh's health sector and the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI and RC) as well as the Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in the field of organ transplantation. GIMS has proposed to train Bangladeshi doctors in liver transplantation, assist them during surgeries in Bangladesh, and offer post-procedure care via telemedicine.
The discussions also covered the potential for increasing trade in surgical equipment and pharmaceutical products. Bangladesh's health minister expressed interest in boosting exports of vaccines and cancer medicines to Pakistan and invited Pakistani investors to explore opportunities in Bangladesh's health sector.
