Kuala Lumpur:The Defence Ministry launched the National Defence Literacy Programme to enhance public awareness, knowledge, and understanding of national defence, security, and sovereignty. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin emphasized the need for deeper comprehension of national defence due to an evolving security threat landscape, highlighting the role Malaysians can play in safeguarding the nation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamed Khaled underscored that modern security threats extend beyond physical or military dangers to include the digital realm. The programme aims to build public resilience, which in turn acts as a deterrent force. He stressed that continuous defence literacy efforts are crucial for the public to better understand defence and security issues and recognize their role in national defence.
The programme's initial rollout is in Sabah, with plans for nationwide expansion. Mohamed Khaled described national defence as vital, comparing it to a fence, umbrella, and anchor, and explained that strengthening public resilience does not require military involvement. The programme will actively disseminate awareness about defence issues, highlighting that threats are pervasive and not limited to traditional borders.
The event included segments like Bicara Ancaman Kognitif and Bicara Pahlawan Negara, focusing on cognitive threats and public perception. The latter session featured discussions with retired military figures, led by Major General (Rtd) Datuk Dr Radzi Abd Hamid and other distinguished panellists.
The initiative is led by the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security in collaboration with Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, emphasizing that every societal layer contributes to defending the nation's security and sovereignty.
