Dhaka:Bangladesh celebrated World Tourism Day with vibrant events as the government announced plans to elevate tourism to a major economic sector, alongside the traditional pillars of RMG exports and remittances.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a colorful rally from Parjatan Bhaban in Agargaon marked the occasion, bringing together tourism stakeholders and representatives to showcase Bangladesh's attractions and the economic potential of tourism. The rally was followed by a bicycle procession, enhancing the visibility of the celebration.
The Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) organized a guided city tour for underprivileged children, offering them a chance to explore attractions in the capital. The celebrations will continue until October 3, featuring a mix of public engagement, policy discussions, international outreach, and cultural showcases.
Abul Kalam Azad Siddiqui, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, emphasized the government's focus on making tourism a significant economic driver through coordinated development. Civil Aviation and Tourism Secretary Fahmida Akhter noted the holistic approach, including infrastructure development and digital automation, to transform tourism from a leisure activity into a robust economic sector.
This year's theme, 'Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,' highlights the role of technology in reshaping tourism services. The government aims to integrate technology into the tourism ecosystem, planning a digital platform for travelers to discover and access services.
The ministry is also working on a Tourism Satellite Account to improve tourism economy data. A Tourism Master Plan covering 1,498 attractions is in development, with the Bangladesh Tourism Board aiming to finalize it by December. The plan envisions sustainable development of various destinations.
BPC Chairman Md Shamimuzzaman stated that private-sector participation is crucial, with 60 development projects worth Tk 19,000 crore submitted for approval. These projects aim to raise tourism's economic contribution and create rural opportunities.
The World Tourism Day events will include stakeholder meetings and discussions with diplomats to attract more foreign visitors. The celebration will conclude at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, featuring thematic stalls and virtual destination experiences. A seminar will discuss the theme, with Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat attending as chief guest. The Bangladesh Tourism Award will be introduced, recognizing contributions to sustainable tourism and innovation. A cultural performance will conclude the event.
