Dhaka:A man has been apprehended by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) for allegedly defrauding an Italy-based Bangladeshi expatriate of approximately Tk 700,000 by posing as a female Bangladesh Army soldier using AI-generated images.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the suspect, Tofayel Alam Titu, 35, was arrested in Dhaka's Darus Salam area on September 20. Investigators revealed that Titu used social media platforms such as Facebook and IMO to establish a romantic relationship with a 22-year-old expatriate. He impersonated a female soldier and communicated using a feminine voice.
The accused allegedly solicited money through mobile financial services bKash and Nagad, citing various reasons, including his mother's supposed illness. Law enforcement officials recovered three mobile phones and SIM cards associated with the financial accounts used in the fraudulent activities.
Following a one-day remand, Titu reportedly provided a confessional statement in court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on September 23. The PBI is currently investigating the possibility of additional accomplices and tracking the funds obtained through the scam.
