New York:State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir urged UN member states to invest more consistently in peacebuilding efforts, emphasizing that sustained support for nationally led initiatives would secure a peaceful future for all. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Humaiun addressed a ministerial meeting of the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) in New York, held on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly. He proposed five measures to enhance peacebuilding, including the creation of decent jobs for women and youth by linking local industries to global value chains. Humaiun highlighted the need for adequate, predictable, and sustained financing for peacebuilding initiatives. Bangladesh, recently elected as a vice-chair of the PBC session, expressed gratitude for the confidence shown by member states. The state minister emphasized the importance of cooperation among local communities, national governments, and the UN to prevent violence and maintain peace. He urged the PBC to strengt hen its advisory role during transitions from peacekeeping to peacebuilding, ensuring support is tailored to the specific circumstances of each country. Additionally, he advocated for the integration of the Women, Peace and Security, and Youth, Peace and Security agendas across the commission's work, along with effective implementation of the 2025 Peacebuilding Architecture Review. Humaiun noted Bangladesh's extensive participation in UN peacekeeping over the past three decades, highlighting the service of its peacekeepers, including women, as a testament to the country's commitment to addressing conflict root causes. He stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's government is pursuing inclusive governance, social justice, and equal opportunities, aiming to protect rights, empower women and youth, and strengthen social cohesion. The state minister reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to collaborating with partners to enhance the effectiveness of UN peacebuilding efforts.
