Dhaka:The Bangladesh Bank has given initial approval for the creation of five digital banks in the country.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the central bank will issue Letters of Intent (LoIs) to these entities, allowing them to start operational procedures necessary for a full launch. This decision was made during a meeting of the Bangladesh Bank Board of Directors, which was presided over by Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman.
The approved digital banks include bKash Digital Bank by bKash, Nova Digital Bank by Banglalink, Boost Digital Bank by Robi Axiata, Digital Banking of Bhutan by Bhutan's DK Bank, and Kori Digital Bank by Technohaven. These five entities were chosen from a total of 12 applicants who had submitted applications for digital bank licenses between September 1 and November 2, 2025.
Approval for these banks had been delayed due to internal protests and other issues during the tenure of former Governor Ahsan H Mansur. With the formation of the BNP government and the appointment of Mostaqur Rahman as the new governor, the decision was made to proceed with the existing applicants without calling for new applications.
