New York:Biman Bangladesh Airlines has entered into an agreement with Boeing to purchase 11 additional aircraft, marking a significant expansion in Bangladesh's aviation sector. The announcement was made by Prime Minister's Adviser Mahdi Amin at a press briefing held at the Hyatt Grand Central New York.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the agreement was signed by Biman Chairman Rumee A Hossain on behalf of the national carrier. Mahdi Amin emphasized that the decision to buy the aircraft was driven by the country's aviation needs and plans to open new routes. He highlighted Bangladesh's long-standing relationship with Boeing and mentioned that future discussions with Airbus could occur based on the country's requirements.
The signing ceremony was attended by several senior US government officials, including US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir noted that their presence underscored the importance of Bangladesh-US relations and demonstrated the two nations' commitment to expanding trade and investment.
The agreement is part of Bangladesh's broader efforts to strengthen its aviation sector and economic ties with the United States. The signing was among the activities during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
In addition to this recent agreement, Bangladesh had previously signed a deal with Boeing in April to purchase 14 aircraft, valued at $3.7 billion. Discussions are ongoing regarding future aircraft purchases, potentially involving Airbus, to accommodate the growing demands of Bangladesh's expanding aviation sector.
