New York:Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called for ongoing international assistance to ensure a sustainable resolution to the Rohingya crisis, aiming for the dignified return of the displaced individuals to Myanmar.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister made this appeal during a meeting with Julie Bishop, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Myanmar. The meeting took place at the Hyatt Grand Central New York hotel on Tuesday, as part of Prime Minister Rahman's visit to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The discussions centered on the Rohingya crisis and emphasized the need for an effective international response to this enduring issue. Rahman underscored the importance of global cooperation to facilitate the safe return of the Rohingyas to their homeland.
Present at the meeting were State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN Irene Khan, Prime Minister's Adviser Mahdi Amin, and Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Rahman will participate in a high-level side event on the Rohingya crisis titled "The Rohingya Crisis A Renewed Call for a Durable Solution from Protracted Displacement, with Justice and Accountability." This event, co-hosted by Bangladesh and The Gambia, with the European Union as a co-sponsor, seeks to bolster international political and humanitarian support for solving the crisis. It also aims to enhance accountability efforts and establish conditions for the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of the Rohingyas to Myanmar.
UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres has advocated for sustained international support for Bangladesh and other countries hosting refugees. He emphasized addressing the root causes of the Rohingya crisis and creating conditions for their voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return.
Julie Bishop, as the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Myanmar, continues to engage with stakeholders regarding the crisis in Myanmar and the situation of the Rohingya.
During his visit to New York, Prime Minister Rahman is engaging in numerous bilateral and high-level meetings alongside the UN General Assembly. He is also scheduled to deliver his inaugural address at the General Assembly on September 24.
