Khulna: A murder case has been filed against four students of Khulna University (KU) along with 20-25 unidentified individuals following the death of North Western University (NWU) student Md Azmul Hossain. The case was lodged by the victim's father, Qutub Uddin, at Harintana Police Station at approximately 10:00pm on Saturday, as confirmed by Officer-in-Charge Md Iqbal Hossain.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the incident occurred after Azmul was accused of theft and subsequently beaten at a mess on Masjid Goli of Islamnagar Road, across from the Khan Jahan Ali Hall of KU. During the altercation on Friday night, he reportedly fell from the roof of the four-storey building. Azmul was transported in a critical condition to Khulna Medical College Hospital around 1:30am on Saturday, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police and local sources revealed that Azmul, a first-year student in the English Department at NWU located in Sonadanga, dined at the mess on Friday night without paying, which allegedly sparked a conflict. Following the incident, several students and locals accused him of theft and allegedly assaulted him. He was then taken to the rooftop, where further assaults allegedly took place, and his hair was cut.
Azmul was a resident of Bara Sholua village under Darshana Police Station in Chuadanga and lived in a rented mess in the Masjid Goli area near KU. His family reported receiving a call during the incident demanding Tk 100,000, but the phone was later switched off. Police are currently investigating this allegation.
OC Iqbal Hossain stated that an investigation is underway and assured that legal actions will be taken against those implicated. He confirmed that four KU students were named in the case, with an additional 20-25 unidentified persons also accused.
