Dhaka: Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain today announced plans to install modern equipment at the Infertility Centre of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) to enhance infertility treatment in Bangladesh.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister stated that the Prime Minister has instructed authorities to establish world-class treatment facilities nationwide. Advanced technologies from various countries will be introduced to ensure superior treatment options are available in Bangladesh.
The announcement was made during a scientific seminar at the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Unit of Dhaka Medical College, marking Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month. The minister highlighted the increasing infertility rate due to hormonal and metabolic issues among women, largely attributed to PCOS.
The minister mentioned ongoing discussions with countries like China to procure advanced technologies for Bangladesh. Emphasizing the need for skilled physicians in infertility treatment, he noted the social stigma couples face when unable to conceive and the importance of addressing this issue through medical intervention.
Sakhawat also stressed the necessity of reducing the number of patients seeking infertility treatment abroad, particularly in India and Thailand, which results in a significant outflow of foreign currency. Efforts will be made to conduct awareness campaigns at district and village levels to assure people of the availability of comparable treatment in Bangladesh.
Minister Sakhawat expressed hope that achieving an 80 percent success rate in infertility cases would be a significant accomplishment for the country. He pledged to support physicians involved in infertility treatment and work towards fulfilling commitments with their cooperation.
The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr Musarrat Sultana, Head of the DMCH Gynaecology Department. Other speakers included Health Services Division Secretary Dr ANM Bazlur Rashid, Directorate General of Health Services Director General Professor Dr. Pravath Chandra Biswas, Dhaka Medical College Principal Professor Dr Md Mazharul Shaheen, and DMCH Director Brigadier General AKM Farhad Hossain.
