Dhaka: Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) today launched a comprehensive cleaning and mosquito-control initiative across all 75 wards, aligning with a nationwide three-month program aimed at dengue prevention and cleanliness enhancement, following directives from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the special drive was meticulously supervised by DSCC regional executive officers. This initiative is slated to occur every Saturday for the next three months across all DSCC wards, with the goal of identifying and eradicating Aedes mosquito breeding sites, bolstering mosquito-control measures, and raising public awareness about dengue prevention.
Today's operation spanned various residential and commercial areas, including roads, alleys, drains, and canals, as well as construction sites, parking lots, rooftops, and abandoned structures within the city corporation's jurisdiction. During these inspections, stagnant water was cleared to prevent mosquito breeding, and Aedes larvae were promptly destroyed upon detection. Items capable of retaining water, such as coconut shells, plastic containers, tyres, and flowerpots, were also removed to curb potential breeding sites.
The DSCC carried out larviciding and adulticiding operations in specified areas, while sanitation workers were tasked with removing accumulated garbage and waste from roads, footpaths, and nearby areas. Additionally, awareness rallies were organized in all 75 wards to motivate citizens to actively participate in dengue prevention efforts. Participants, including city officials, mosquito-control and sanitation workers, and local residents, emphasized the importance of maintaining clean homes and surroundings and avoiding stagnant water accumulation. Awareness leaflets with dengue prevention guidelines were also distributed among residents.
The DSCC Health Department underscored that spraying insecticides alone is insufficient for effective dengue control and highlighted the necessity of destroying Aedes breeding grounds and ensuring active public involvement. Field-level monitoring will be intensified every Saturday, alongside regular mosquito-control and cleaning activities.
The DSCC authorities have called on city residents to support the program by maintaining cleanliness in their homes, workplaces, and surrounding areas, and ensuring that water does not accumulate anywhere, thereby contributing to the comprehensive dengue prevention strategy.
