Dhaka: Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury emphasized the importance of robust internet connectivity, digital wallets for every citizen, and integrating the rural economy into a digital framework for sustainable development and mainstreaming marginalized communities. He highlighted these points during a group dialogue titled 'Financial Inclusion 2.0', organized by the Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) at a hotel in Dhaka.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the finance minister underscored the role of effective digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI) in achieving sustainable development and enhancing financial and digital inclusion. He stated that without strong internet infrastructure, the full potential of digital finance cannot be realized.
The minister further discussed government initiatives aimed at identifying marginal producers and artisans through the 'One Village, One Product' program, integrating them into digital payment and banking systems. He noted that the local production of affordable smartphones, priced between Tk 4,000-5,000, has facilitated access to technology for farmers and the general public, enabling them to gather crucial information on weather, fertilization needs, and market prices.
Additionally, Amir Khosru highlighted efforts to promote financial inclusion through banking services linked to allowances under schemes such as the Family Card, Farmer Card, and provisions for religious leaders. He also stressed the importance of ensuring cybersecurity and policy safeguards to prevent technological advancements from impeding innovation.
The dialogue was moderated by Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman and attended by leaders from various banks, insurance companies, and financial institutions.
