Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman today affirmed the government's unwavering commitment to safeguarding citizens' rights, particularly in combating human trafficking. Addressing a national consultation meeting, he emphasized the gravity of human trafficking and the government's determination to counteract this violation of human rights.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting, titled "Strengthening Criminal Justice Responses to Prevent Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants," was jointly organized by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) at a city hotel. Md Asaduzzaman, serving as the chief guest, highlighted recent legal amendments designed to tackle human trafficking more effectively. He noted, "We have amended several laws, including the Human Trafficking Act, 2026, making the definition of human trafficking more comprehensive. Additionally, online gambling and other illegal activities have been brought under the legal framework."
The minister also referenced Bangladesh's ratification of the Palermo Protocol in September 2019, which underscores the country's ongoing commitment to international standards in combating trafficking. Despite the progress, Md Asaduzzaman acknowledged certain challenges, such as limitations in law enforcement resources and evidence collection, but remained optimistic about the strides made in reducing human trafficking.
He further addressed the complex issue of migration, noting, "While human trafficking is not as widespread as before, we face an unemployment crisis that drives people abroad for work. Many end up as undocumented immigrants." Highlighting the need for international cooperation, he solicited support to protect the rights of migrants.
The event was chaired by Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Md Khadem Ul Kayes and featured remarks from Kristian Holge, UNODC's Regional Representative for South Asia, who attended as a special guest.
