Dhaka: UK-based Menzies Aviation plans to invest $12 million and create over 1,000 direct jobs during its first year if selected as the second passenger-handling operator at Dhaka airport's Third Terminal. Company officials unveiled the proposed investment and employment plans at a press conference at a city hotel today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Menzies' operations could also support over 4,500 indirect jobs across Bangladesh's broader economy and supply chain. Charles Wyley, executive vice-president for the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, and John Henderson, Menzies' senior vice-president of operations for the Middle East and Africa, addressed the briefing. Sakib Ershad, director of trade and investment at the British High Commission in Dhaka, also spoke on the occasion.
Menzies said its proposed investment would cover airport operations, workforce development, and the enhancement of local aviation capabilities. Under the plan, the company would establish a Menzies Training Academy in Dhaka to deliver international-standard aviation training and create long-term career opportunities for Bangladeshi nationals. It also intends to collaborate with local universities, colleges, and schools to develop aviation-related academic programs, internships, and graduate career pathways.
The initiative would promote international knowledge and skills transfer while strengthening local operational, technical, and managerial expertise, company officials said. It would also offer Bangladeshi employees opportunities to build careers in the international aviation industry, they added.
Menzies further plans to manufacture and source its uniforms locally, potentially generating business opportunities for Bangladesh's textile and garment industry and increasing domestic participation in its supply chain. The company said its operations would help build a sustainable national aviation workforce through local recruitment, professional training, leadership development, and long-term knowledge transfer.
Responding to a question over whether geopolitical or political considerations could influence the selection of the second operator, Ershad expressed confidence that the decision would be based on fair competition. 'We are confident that it will be a fair competition rather than geopolitical influence,' he said.
Menzies said the proposed investment would also strengthen Bangladesh-UK trade and investment relations through expanded commercial engagement and exchanges of skills and knowledge. The appointment of a second passenger-handling operator is expected to introduce competition and improve ground-handling services at the Third Terminal. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh aims to begin partial operations at the terminal by December 16 this year.
