Dhaka: US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen today met Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman and State Minister Yasser Khan Choudhury at the latter's office in the secretariat. During this significant meeting, the US envoy extended his congratulations to Andaleeve Rahman on his recent appointment as the Information and Broadcasting Minister.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Andaleeve Rahman reaffirmed the government's commitment to maintaining freedom of expression and fostering an environment conducive to a free media. He highlighted the government's efforts to implement positive changes in the political culture alongside reforms in state administration, citing the broadcasting of opposition party news on Bangladesh Television (BTV) as a notable example of this commitment. The minister also addressed the necessity of curbing the spread of defamatory statements, misinformation, and disinformation, particularly on social media platforms.
Ambassador Christensen underscored the importance of engaging with stakeholders to address these critical issues. Minister Andaleeve acknowledged past challenges over the last 17 years but emphasized the current government's sincere intentions to bring about positive changes in state governance. State Minister Yasser Khan also highlighted the significance of combating misinformation and disinformation, advocating for the utilization of artificial intelligence to tackle these challenges effectively. He expressed concern about the impact of malicious propaganda spread through fake social media accounts on ordinary citizens and emphasized the need for measures to ensure their safety online.
The US ambassador further noted the strengthening relationship between Bangladesh and the United States, which is expanding into various sectors, including trade and commerce. He highlighted the US's continued economic support for the Rohingyas, particularly in the health sector, to prevent infectious diseases. Minister Andaleeve reassured that the government has no intention of controlling the media, emphasizing their responsible and sincere approach to uphold media freedom and the right to freedom of expression. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss various issues of mutual interest between the two nations.
