Dhaka: Prime Minister's Press Secretary Saleh Shibly on Wednesday urged the media to help counter misinformation and raise public awareness about dengue prevention, saying the government's efforts to ensure accountability and improve public services need to be communicated clearly to the people. Speaking at a press conference at the Karobi Hall of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Shibly said the media acts as a bridge between the government and the people by informing the public of government activities and ensuring accountability.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Shibly emphasized that the government considers itself accountable to the people and aims for transparency in its activities. He highlighted that the government has been sharing information about its initiatives through various channels, including the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the PMO, and the Prime Minister's Press Wing. Shibly pointed out that while some government initiatives are already yielding results, others need more time to manifest their impact, particularly in addressing the country's power and gas situation.
Referring to the recent energy crisis, Shibly noted that the situation has improved, expressing hope for further advancements. He recounted measures taken during the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, such as adjusting office and school hours to manage power shortages, and stated that the current government is working towards a lasting solution to the energy challenges.
Shibly also urged the media and public to support the government's three-month dengue prevention and cleanliness campaign, emphasizing the critical period from September to November. He stressed the importance of preventing Aedes mosquito breeding by eliminating stagnant water and encouraged everyone to dedicate time to maintaining clean surroundings.
The press secretary called on television channels and newspapers to introduce segments that help the public discern facts from misinformation, noting the prevalent confusion on social media. He suggested that regular content could aid in shifting public discourse away from rumours.
Shibly reiterated that the government's work extends beyond political activities, focusing on restoring socioeconomic and political values to improve citizens' lives. He emphasized the government's commitment to serving the people and fostering a sense of ownership among the populace, stating that public office should be seen as a responsibility rather than an opportunity for power.
