Dhaka: Prime Minister's Adviser Mahdi Amin stated today that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's government has achieved a significant level of freedom of expression and human rights over the past seven months since taking office.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahdi emphasized at a Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) discussion held in Dhanmondi that the government has not engaged in any state-sponsored human rights violations. He highlighted the absence of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, or suppression of opposition parties' political views during this period.
Mahdi, who also serves as the spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, assured that any isolated incidents or administrative errors at the local level are immediately addressed. He emphasized the government's commitment to establishing the rule of law and ensuring accountability in governance.
He described the ongoing efforts to dismantle central suppression and address complaints from marginalized communities as a positive shift in governance. Mahdi expressed hope for further strengthening transparency moving forward.
Discussing the July mass uprising, Mahdi noted the widespread participation from diverse societal segments, including students, workers, and professionals, in opposing fascist rule. He described this unity as a pivotal moment in national history.
On legislative developments, Mahdi mentioned that over 100 ordinances passed by the previous interim government have been converted into full-fledged acts. He stressed the importance of stakeholder consultation in the legislative process and recognized the ongoing nature of lawmaking.
Mahdi called for prioritizing national interest and unity despite political differences. He acknowledged the significant role of the BNP in the country's democratic transitions and highlighted the government's commitment to an inclusive and accountable governance model.
He reiterated the government's dedication to upholding democracy, sovereignty, and national development as a tribute to those who sacrificed during the struggle against fascism. The advisor concluded by expressing optimism for Bangladesh's future, driven by the potential and talent of the younger generation.
